Recently over 500 Afghan refugees landed at the Philadelphia International Airport, where they were to be processed quickly and transported to locations throughout the United States, where they would receive food and other accommodations.
Unfortunately, on August 30th, transportation was delayed and 40 people were stranded at the airport with no access to food until a ride to their next location could be arranged. Luckily, a group of volunteers, including Klasko’s own Michele Madera quickly sprang into action.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Chef Jose Andres from World Chef Kitchen, restaurant owner Judy Li, and representative of the waste-prevention organization Too Good To Go Abbe Stern enlisted the help of Pasha’s Philly and Healthy Picks Deli. The restaurants quickly agreed to provide 40 halal meals each for the recent arrivals while they waited for transport. Volunteers were needed to pick up and deliver the meals to the airport and Judy Ni’s contact, Jill Fink, executive director of the small-business assistance nonprofit The Merchants Fund, was ready to help. Jill then contacted Klasko partner Michele Madera, to ask for help with the relief effort. Michele was happy to lend a helping hand. Thanks to those who organized and volunteered, the hot meals were delivered to the airport and passed on to the Afghan families within three hours.
