E-Verify Offline During Government Shutdown

While many immigration agencies are currently not impacted by the government shutdown, E-Verify has been taken offline. E-Verify verifies work authorization for new employees electronically. During the shutdown, employers cannot utilize the E-Verify system; however, they must still complete the I-9 process for new employees and adhere to all I-9 regulations and guidance. Employers will have to make a plan to run E-Verify checks after the shutdown for new hires during the shutdown, since workers can be hired and an I-9 can be completed for them.

For a full outline of the government shutdown’s effect on immigration agencies, please see Klasko’s client alert published here.
